INVENTION OE SPANIARD
"Ingenious, especially in the intric-
ate details, but it is handicapped by
its ;inability to take off in a short dist-
anice," was the comment given by,
Prof. E. A. Stalker of the aeronautical
engineering department in regard to
the so-called "heliocopter model" aidr-f
plane designed and built by De la
Cier'va, noted Spanish inventor.
In addition to the regulation engine
and propeller, this type of airship is
equipped with an immense, nearly
s horizontal propellor, which takes the
place of the ordinary wings. As the
plane is driven forward, these large
vanes revolve and furnish the .lifting
Power which enables the craft to take
off. This' design permits an almost
vertical descent, allowing the plane to
land in a very small apea. However,
in ascent, a vertical flight is not yet
possible, although comparatively steep
angles of" "climb" may be assumed.
In regard to ordinary flying, Professor
Stalker explained that this machine-
has a relative high degree of effici-
ency.
One feature of the large vanes is the
r hinged attachment to their axis per-
mitting them to drop after a landing.
During flight, they are extended byi
the centrifugal force.
The Spanish inventor has experi-
mented with this type of machine
since the World war. Within the last
* two years, he has overcome many of
the original problems, and has meet
with a fair degree of success. Suc-
cessful research with this type of air-
plane has also been carried on in:
England, accordiog to Professor Stalk-
er. However, after several trips Ini
that country, the plane was smashed
in a trial flight in France.

flight New Photo Shows the niacillea being lwepAred for flight.
