Influenza
During the past six weeks influenza
has been prevalent in England and in
continental Europe, particularly Ger-
many. Recently it made its appearance
in New York City and in other Atlantic
ports. The University Health Service
has made every effort to ascertain
facts relative to the progress and se-
verity of the present pandemic of "flu."
While one cannot predict what the
future "behavior" of this recent fourth
annual flaring up of influenza in the
United States, there is no cause for
immediate alarm. The present epi-
demic is not so severe as that of 1918.
No increase of. influenza has been
reported for Michigan and the other
Middle Western States. Only ten
cases of influenza in Detroit were re-
ported for the week ending Feb. 4.
Should Be On Guard
Students should- be on guard, how-
ever, at this particular season of the
year. In view of the prevalence of
the disease elsewhere it is well to
regard all colds as mild "flu." No
student or instructor who has a cold
should attend classes. Droplet infec-
tion-open coughing or sneezing on
the part of those afflicted with colds-
should be rigidly banned from' the
class room. Students with colds should
report immediately to the Health Serv-
ice.
Remember that "flu" is spread by
contact infection-close social com-
munion, and that as a neans of pre-
vention individuals should avoid, in

so far as it is possible, all promiscuous
gatherings of people.
Hand to mouth infection is another
important means by which "flu" . and
the other communicable diseases are
contracted. In the course of the day,
the hands become contaminated with
germs. Therefore, the hands should
be thoroughly washed before eatizig.

The dangers from the use of the com-
mon drinking .cup, the roller towel
and eating utensils that, have not been
properly cleansed and sterilized should
be borne in mind.
