BETTERING TRACK SPORTS.
It is pretty generally admitted that
Michigan is not putting her best footj
forward in track. Nobody would
claim, probably, that the men in the
local student body are any less fit'
physically than those in any other
large university. Going on the as-
sumption, then, that there is some-
thing that prevents a maximum effi-
ciency in this branch of sport, it is in-
teresting to try to ascertain the pos-
sible reasons, whether one believes or
not that it is desirable to get top-notch
results in the way of scores.
In the first place, the generality may
be made that there is no considerable
interest in track sports on the campus,1
and that this indifference limits the
number of candidates. There is some-
thing in this, but it is more a phe-
nomenon than a cause.. The real
cause seems to lie in a place where it
may be remedied, namely in the hands
of those who manage athletics at the
university. Track insignia should be
more liberally awarded, so that a man
need not be one of the half dozen best
candidates in his event in the country;.
at present there is little temptation for
the fairly good man to go out for
Varsity track competition. There
should be more meets with important
teams, despite considerations of ex-
pense. Good quarters for year-around
training should be provided. The
track coach should be allowed to give
his entire time to track, and not be
expected to train the football team in
the fall.
The college of one punster is re-
vealed by his comment that the lights
in the dome of University hall indi-
cate the lit department.

Mrs. Henry Joy and Mr. John New-
berry, of Detroit, together wth Mr. Al-
bert Kahn, architect of the Newberry
residence hall, were in Ann Arbor yes-
terday considering plans for its fur-
nishing.
Laura Feige, '15, will be the speaker
at the weekly Vesper Service in New-
berry hall from 5:00 to 5:30 o'clock
today.
Tickets for the annual Michigan
womens' luncheon, to be held in Bar-
bour gymnasium at noon Saturday,
April 3, are now being printed, and
will be on sale soon by representatives
of the various classes, according to
Jeannette Armstrong, '17, chairman of
the publicity committee. The price
will be $1.00, and will include admis-
sion to the matinee performance of the
Junior Play following the luncheon.
Proof for the women's number of
the Gargoyle is now being read, and
the edition will be out on Friday,
March 5.
Senior women must be measured for
their caps and gowns within the next
ten days, in order to insure their ar-
rival in time for the performance of
the Junior Play on April 1. Measure-
ments are being taken by Mack and
Co., and by Henry and Co.
Arrest Fraternity House Sneak Thief
Jess Motley, colored, was arrested
Monday, charged with stealing a leath-
er bag from the Nu Sigma Nu house
where he was employed. Upon closer
investigation, it was discovered that
Motley was responsible for a number
of thefts which have occurred in the
same house. L. R. Craner, '1pM, dis-
covered his bag in Motley's room, and
swore out a warrant for his arrest.
