STUDENTS VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Plans for ,the cooperative book ex-
change to be established on the cam-
pus are almost completed, and at the
beginning of the first week of exami-
nations, the contemplated opening of
the exchange will take place at Mc-
Millan hall. It is planned to run the
exchange during the first five weeks
of the new semester, and it is expected
that all students who desire to do so
will have availed themselves of the
privileges offered by the plan by that
time. The voluntary services of a suf-
ficient number of men have been secur-
ed to provide the necessary organiza-
tion, and these men will work under
the supervision of M. W. Welch, '17,
who will oversee all the details of the
proposition during the first semester
of its inception.
The actual system under which the
exchange will operate is as follows:
Any student may turn in the text boks
which he wishes to dispose of, and
they will be arbitrarily graded by the
official in charge, as to condition.
Books of the first grade will be sold
for two-thirds of their original value,
those of the second grade may be pur-
chased for one-half of their original
selling price and those books which
have been pronounced of third grade
will be marked at one-third of the
price for which they were sold when
new. A card with a catalogue number
on it will be given to the man desiring
to sell the book, and an envelope, with
a corresponding number on it, wil be
pilaced in the book after it has been
graded. When the book is purchased,
the money received is placed in the
envelope, and filed to await the claim
of the book owner.
The system, as outlined, is not the
old time cooperative plan, but is pure-
ly an exchange system without any
profit from the transactions accruing
to anybody. The exchange itself pays
no money for the books and takes no
responsibility. The plan offers merely
a -market of exchange whereby the
profit to both parties in the transac-
tion may be increased.
An effort is now being made to en-.
list the support of a number of the
prominent men on the campus, and
the next stepto be taken by the men
in charge, will be to secure the back-
ing of the several campus honor soci-
eties to the plan.
FORESTERS TO KEEP IN TOUCH
VITH GRADUATES BY MEETINGS
Realizing the importance of keeping
in touch with modern forestry meth-
ods, the forestry department has ar-
ranged a series of conferences for this
winter, which will bring Michigan
graduate foresters to the university
from practically every national 'forest
reserve in the country.
Those graduates who are unable to
attend, have been requested to send in'
reports of new methods and results,
papers dealing with difficulties devel-
oped by current practice, and prob-
lems on which they are working and in
which it is possible that the experi-
ences brought out by the conference
may prove of benefit.
