RARIE MARY" Music

Experiments covering a whole sem-
ester's work are being carried on by
advanced students in the mechanical
engineering department. Investiga-
tions into the properties of alcohol
when used in a two-cycle gasoline en-
gine are being made to determine how
alcohol may be used as a substitute
for the increasing cost oil products;es-
pecially gasoline.
Other experiments of a more me-
chanical nature are being worked,
some of the more interesting ones be-
ing the determination of the effect of
moisture on the flow of steam through
nozzles, the analyzation of the critical
speed of high speed shafts, particular-
ly with reference to steam turbines,
and the investigation of the effect of
compression on gas engines.
One group of students is attempting
to discover the cause of /the excessive
noise in the ventilating fans of the new
engineering building. Prof. J. A.
Bursley is also conducting a research
experiment with the aid of several
students of class 22, in testing the fan
heating system in the laboratory, with
the view of discovering the best ar-
rangement of heating coils through
which air is forced in the process of
being heated.
