Investiga- tions into the properties of alcohol when used in a two-cycle gasoline en- gine are being made to determine how alcohol may be used as a substitute for the increasing cost oil products;es- pecially gasoline. Other experiments of a more me- chanical nature are being worked, some of the more interesting ones be- ing the determination of the effect of moisture on the flow of steam through nozzles, the analyzation of the critical speed of high speed shafts, particular- ly with reference to steam turbines, and the investigation of the effect of compression on gas engines. One group of students is attempting to discover the cause of /the excessive noise in the ventilating fans of the new engineering building. Prof. J. A. Bursley is also conducting a research experiment with the aid of several students of class 22, in testing the fan heating system in the laboratory, with the view of discovering the best ar- rangement of heating coils through which air is forced in the process of being heated.
