of the two events they are entered in,
and Trainer Farrell expects there will
also be other withdrawals, and Michi-
gan will have a more advantageous po-
sition. There are nine teams entered
in each event.
Michigan's relay candidates have
been working out all during the spring
vacation on the Ferry field speedways,
and have already become acclimated to
the open-air track. Training table for
these men, together with the trio of
sprint men, Smith, Bond and Seward,
who will be entered in the special
events at Philadelphia on the 25th,
was established at the Union, during
the holidays. Besides the dash men,,
those on the trainingstable have been
Haff, Jansen, Murphy, Griest, Ufer,
Fox and Lamey.
Yesterday saw a large squad of men4
on the track and field, working out un-i
der Trainer Farrell. With the reopen-F
ing of school today, the number will
be greatly increased, and it is expectedi
that the entire complement of out-door
men will be in training by the end of
the week.I

That perennial favorite, E. H. Soth-
ern, introduces "Charlemagne," an his-
torical drama, to Detroit theatergoers
this week, when he appears in a rep-
ertoire at the Garrick theater includ-
ing, "If I Were King," on Monday and
Tuesday nights; "Lord Dundreary," at
Wednesday matinee; "Hamlet," Wed-
nesday night and "Charlemagne," on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights
and Saturday matinee.
"Charlemagne" was introduced for
the first time in Chicago last week,
scoring an instant success. Justin
Hubtley McCarthy, the author, has
written the play especially for Soth-
ern, who impersonates Charles as the
dashing young king of the Franks, and
his struggle for the possession of the
throne. The play is rich in lines and
replete with comedy. Sothern is sup-
ported by Elizabeth Valentine, who
plays opposite him, and 40 of his reg-
ular company.
