Soph and' Fresh Engineers Nominate.
Nominations for offices in the fresh
and soph engineering classes were held
last week. The sophs nominated John
Brent for president by petition. The
others are as follows: president, Les-
ter Keliher, Raymond Hill, vice-pres-
ident, Broomhaur; secretary, George
Duffield, Carl Guthe; treasurer, Harry
T. Cope; football manager, Whitred
Cook; baseball manager, Donald Cam-
eron; basketball manager, Fletcher,
Carrol Pew, Harry Weeks; track man-
ager, Alvah Frederick, Arthur Bassett,
Milhn.
The fresh engineers nominated the
following: president, Stewart Breily,H.
A. Enos; vice-president, John Leonard,
E. Loudy; secretary, I. N. Cuthbert;
treasurer, M. Downur; baseball man-
ager, T. Fowler, C. Elliott; track man-
ager, J. Slegman, C. Dorland.
The elections will be held in the new
engineering building Saturday morn-
ing from 8:30 to 12:30.
City Has New Police Department.
Ann Arbor has a flying squadron.
For the past few days the auto and
motorcycle speedsters have been
watched closely by a plain clothes
man on a motorcycle. This part of
the local police department was in-
stalled last Tuesday and several ar-
rests have been made, mostly on State
street. The offenders are arraigned
before Judge Doty.

that if a man once won a position on a
team, it was customary for him to hold
over the following year, ex officio. An
"M" man, in other words, need not con-
descend to competition to retain hi;
place on the team. Allegations were
also heard that the trials for men were
not full and fair. Such allegations may
or may not have been without cause
but at least now there is no possibili-
ty of such complaints.
Acting Captain Thorward has inau-
gurated the plan of holding a fall tour-
nament as a preliminary try-out. It is
an excellent idea for it will not only
give the new men added experieice
but will allow every candidate the
fairest chance possible to demon-
strate his real ability.
Fair and. square competition with
an equal ' chance for all is the only
possible, or proper method of select-
ing varsity teams. Without it they

G. 0. P. Insurgents Organize.
A baker's dozen Republicans of the
insurgent persuasion gathered in one
of the parlors of Newberry Hall last
evening to found the progressive Re-
publican Club of the University of
Michigan. Peter A. Miller was unan-
imously named temporary chairman
and will appoint a committee on con-
stitution which will report at a later
meeting at which the organization is
to be perfected.
