Monthly meetings between Presi-

despite itsrecentresolution toopen the
meetings to the public.
" SACUA is a nine-member faculty
governance committee charged with
advising the president vabout faculty
concemns. Duderstadt visits the com-
mittee once a month~.
At the first meeting of the Spring
term, SACUA voted to open its bi-

an open session after the resolution last
month.
Duderstadt is strongly opposed to
opening the meetings to the general
public. He said the nature of the issues
discussed "demands a very candid and
confidential dialogue." He added that
the meetings have always been closed
andhe does not foresee achangein that
policy.
"There is no useful purpose that
would be served by it ... It is not a time
forpressconferences,"Duderstadtsaid.

"Most of the issues discussed are
not really sensitiveones,"said SACUA£
member Tom Dunn. F s
Dunn said the secrecy of the meet-r f
ings prevents SACUA from imparting
necessary information to the faculty.
"We are not trying to embarrass (Dud-Y
erstadt),"Dunn said, noting the need to
communicate about the general nature
of tenurepromotions and other faculty
interests in an open forum.
SACUA member Henry Griffin
