Duderstadt and the Sen- ateAdvisoryCommitteeon University Affairs (SACUA) will remain closed despite itsrecentresolution toopen the meetings to the public. " SACUA is a nine-member faculty governance committee charged with advising the president vabout faculty concemns. Duderstadt visits the com- mittee once a month~. At the first meeting of the Spring term, SACUA voted to open its bi- monthly meetings with the executive officers. Provost and Executive Vice PresidentforAcademicAffairsGilbert R. Whitaker Jr. meet with SACUA in an open session after the resolution last month. Duderstadt is strongly opposed to opening the meetings to the general public. He said the nature of the issues discussed "demands a very candid and confidential dialogue." He added that the meetings have always been closed andhe does not foresee achangein that policy. "There is no useful purpose that would be served by it ... It is not a time forpressconferences,"Duderstadtsaid.
