rogram offers students chance to 'plunge' into service

FOR THE DAILY
This fall new students will take the
plungeintotheUniversitycommunity.
And the Office of Student Affairs
hopes they will also plunge into com-
munity service through its new pro-
gram - Community Plunge.
The activity will serve as a wel-
*ome program on Sept. 2, the first
Friday of move-in week, for all first-
year students.
The program will encourage first-
yearstudents togetinvolved and famil-
iarize themselves with the Ann Arbor
community.
Participants will have the opportu-
nity to help the community by volun-
teering in activities to aid the Ann
bor district such as a clean-up of the
uron River, a food coalition for St.
Mary's Church and a wheel chair wash
for the eldery community.
Students will be able to choose what
area interests them most and become
active in that specific type of commu-
nity service.
Kelly McElhany, a graduate stu-
dent intem in the Office of Student
Affairs, saidshehopesforashowingof
500 students to participate.
"We hope to get as many students
involved aspossible and welcome them
to the community by getting them in-
volved withotherresidents,"McElhany
said.
A summer flyer will be sent to all
incoming first-year students to inform
themoftheprogram. Students will also
have a chance to pre-register for the
event while moving into the dorms.
The day will begin with a gathering
at the Michigan League where students
will have a chance to meet one another
and their volunteer leaders.
McElhany said there will be a vari-
ety of motivational speakers to prepare
and encourage students.
"Students will be dealing with a
variety of people ranging from home-
less toelders,"McElhany said. "There-
fore we need to inform each student
and make them aware of the situations
they will be dealing with."
Transportation willbe provided for
students to take them to their prospec-
tive sites. Deb Moriarty, assistant to
vice president for student affairs for
special projects, said she hopes that
students with their own form of trans-
portation will be motivated to return to
the volunteersiteon theirown after the
day "plunge" is over.
Following the day devoted to ser-
vice, students will be given the chance
to reflect on their individual experi-
ences with fellow students and group
leaders. The organizers will recruit
juniors and seniors this summer to act
as site leaders and facilitators during
the post-reflection period.
Moriarty and McElhany said they
believetheeventwillbeagreatway for
new students to get involved with the
Ann Arbor community while giving
themachancetomakesomenewfriends
in the process.
If Community Plunge turns out to
be a success this year, the Office of
Student Affairs hopes to make this an
annual event in which all students will
want to get involved in and continue
with throughout the year, helping the
AnnArborcommunityaswellasthem-
selves.
