Rush Delivery
BY JEFF RUSH
Bo to be athletic director
or 'U' president?
Delivery across Michigan:
ANN ARBOR - C'mon, already - does anyone really believe
that just because the University is advertising the position of Director
of Athletics in such papers as the New York Times, Los Angeles
Times, and Wall Street Journal that the job is not Bo Schembechler's if
he wants it?
-Last I heard the reason the regents are conducting the presidential
search in secret is that they are considering Bo and didn't want any other
institutions attempting to top their offer. Maybe Detroit Tigers and
Domino's Pizza owner Tom Monaghan will give Bo another Domino's
franchise if he'll promise to stay.
-Bo Schembechler, coach of the University of Michigan. Period.
Kind of has a ring to it.
-One thing is for sure when Bo is in office - no more left wing-
right wing ideological skirmishes between students. Bo will have
everyone going up the middle.
-And you know Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
James Duderstadt will love Bo's emphasis on defense. The government
contracts will be pouring into North Campus in no time.
TIGER STADIUM, DETROIT - Wednesday night's loss
notwithstanding, Tiger pitcher Jack Morris has got to be giving New
York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner nightmares. Take the righty's
12 wins away from the Tigers and give them to the Yankees and fans in
both cities can kiss the pennant race good-bye.
-Tiger fans can also kiss collusion (alleged) and Morris good-bye at
the end of this season unless Monaghan is willing to give Morris some
of that Domino's Pizza dough. What's 400,000 pizzas at $10 a pair?
Two million dollars, and that's what Morris is going to be asking for.
-The least Monaghan could do is send Steinbrenner a few pizzas
thanking him for controlling his salivary glands when Morris presented
the Yankee boss with "an offer he couldn't refuse." Everyone in Detroit
is happy that Steinbrenner just said no.
-As long as we're sending thank-yous, I think Steinbrenner owes me
one. I showed up at Tiger Stadium and broke Morris' nine-game
winning streak earlier this season, and then went and saw him lose
Wednesday night. At that rate I could almost guarantee a pennant for the
damn Yankees.
THE SILVERDOME, PONTIAC - If the Lions moved out
of the Silverdome and back to the friendly confines of Tiger Stadium
they could almost fill the place up. What's 24,000 fewer seats as long
as it looks good on television?
-You know it's going to be an exciting season on the field when the
subjects most talked about in conjunction with the Lions are their new
AIDS policy and whether general manager Russ Thomas will retire.
FINAL THOUGHTS - Oh Lord, please don't let my least
favorite Detroit columnist, who is always writing about food in his
sports columns, say the reason he is looking forward to the 1988
Summer Olympics in South Korea is the Seoul food.
