with regard to the productivity sys-
tem, because his cases qualified for
only one category: incident reports.
He could count three incidents on his
record: the larceny report at ITI, the
rape case, and the heart attack rescue
attempt.
We left Lamplighter and pulled
into the station at 11:06.
Putting away his briefcase in the
locker room, Waites concluded that
the day was pretty average.
He said the job can be exciting
but the stress involved is extreme.
Two young officers died from heart
attacks in the last year. Sergeant
Gary Geer, 46, died earlier this
month while jogging.
Waites blames the stress on in-
creasing crime and insufficient num-
bers of officers to keep up with the
workload. "One minute you're sit-

ting eating your lunch and the next
minute someone is threatening your
life. Then they expect you to go
from high tension to low level and
give someone directions.
"I wouldn't want my pulse to go
up every day, but a little excitement
makes me feel like I'm alive,"
Waites said.
Another officer agreed, "You
don't want to end up like Fish on
Barney Miller."
