Detroit prepares for
r
pre-season opener
The Detroit Lions are currently holding two-a-day workouts at Oakland University in
preparation for their drive toward a division title. The Lions were a much improved 9-7
last season following a disastrous 2-14 mark the year before.
Al "Bubba" Baker (above left) finds something to smile about during the grueling
pre-season workouts. Larry Lee (above right), the Lions fifth round draft choice out of UCLA,
blocks out a fellow teammate from his offensive guard position during a drill. Fred Scott
(lower left) digs in as he starts to run his pass route. Former Michigan linebacker Andy
Cannavino takes a breather from the tiring workouts. Cannavino was the Lions' 10th round
draft choice in this year's college draft.
Detroit will play their first exhibition game Saturday against the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo
starting at 6:00. The Bills, under NFL Coach of the Year Chuck Knox, edged the New England
Patriots for the AFC Eastern Division title last fall. Buffalo's 11-5 record was the team's best
since 1966. The two teams have met 11 times in the pre-season with the Lions holding a
7-4 edge. Detroit's first home game during the pre-season is set for August 15 against
the Cincinnati Bengals. Game time is 7 p.m.
