DULUTH, Ga. (AP)-It is a familiar
situation: A major golf tournament and
Jack Nicklaus marshaling his resour-
ces for still another assault on the
record book.
In a way, Nicklaus' entire season
boils down to this event, the 63rd PGA
national championship which gets star-
ted today on the 7,070-yard, par-70
Atlanta Athletic Club course.
"LET'S FACE IT-the other three
are gone. Thisis the only one left this
year," Nicklaus said, a reference to the
game's major tournaments, the Big
Four events around which he has built
his golfing life.
"I'm ready to give it my best shot,"
he said. "I'm as readyas I'm going to
be."
And, if he is not a clear-cut favorite,
he is definitely the man to watch. He
hasn't won this season. In fact, he's won
only twice in the last three seasons.
THAT COULD BE deceptive,
however.
This is a "major," the event along
with the Masters, U.S. and British
Opens, which comprise the world's four
important tests. Nicklaus has
dominated those tournaments to an ex-
tent unrivaled in history. He has won
them 17 times and is the defending
champion in this one.
Now, at 41, he concentrates on those
four tournaments. The fact that he has
failed to win in routine tour events, he
indicated, is not significant.
HE HAS BEEN second in three tour-

naments, including the Masters and
last week's Canadian Open.
"I had a chance to win the Masters
and I put myself in position where I
thought I had a chance to win the U.S.
Open, but I couldn't get anything in the
hole when I needed to," he said.
"And then there was the 83," the
dreadful score he shot in the first roun'd
of the British Open, a career-worst that
took him out of that one.
"NOW, HOWEVER, I'm playing
reasonably well and actually putted
pretty well at times last week,"
Nichlaus said. "I played pretty well last
week, kept my patience well and that's
hard to do at this time of the season.
"This is a long, hard golf course and
patience is going to be even more im-
portant this week. I was pleased with
the way I played last week and I feel I
