CONT'D: The theories behind cheating

other spheres of life. One
wouldn't be surprised to find
that the same brain circuits
underlying drug addiction are
responsible for academic dis-
honesty.
In fact, cheating in college
has been linked to drug abuse,
along with shoplifting, unethi-
cal workplace behavior and not
paying income taxes.
The cheating study group
creates a framework that gives
primary and secondary impor-
tance to the various factors that
lead a student to cheat.

As engineers are wont to do,
they confine reality and common
sense into fanciful but impres-
sive flowcharts. A box labeled
"peer behavior" is connected to
another one labeled "frequency
of temptation."
A particularly intriguing
result of their surveys was stu-
dents' dissociation between
belief and behavior. Most stu-
dents find cheating morally
reprehensible, but very few do
anything about it when they
see it. Some may approach the

VIDEO OF
THE WEEK
The effectiveness
of French sex ed
In three minutes, to the tune of
"Sugar Baby Love," a French com-
munity service commercial does
more to promote condom use than
years of public school sexual edu-
cation.
The video follows a computer
animated gay boy from the time
that he's ostracized on the play-
ground to the years he's exploring
the dating field - using proper pro-
tection.
After passing up a gaggle of eye-
batting girls, the boy finds first love
in a sun-kissed surfer dude, then
first lust and first rejection in a
dance club Don Juan.
Heartbroken and confused, our
protagonist staggers through a
series of eccentric trysts, each a
disappointing, albeit, safe lesson in
love.
Butaftersomelacklustermachis-
mo and deceptive rich old men, the
boy finds a prince in the form of a
dashing, convertible-driving doc-
tor, illustrating the commercial's
final message: Vivez assez long-
temps pour trouver le bon. Protegez-
vous. (Live long enough to find the
one. Protectyourself.)

she dropped assault charges against a nephew of
Libyan president Moammar Qaddafi.
"We're not getting too much
new blood in the shrimp
industry, so I guess we have
to manufacture our own."
- ED KEISEL, a Texan shrimp boat captain, after he
delivered the premature baby of his boat's cook
while out at sea.

WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE
OF THE WEEK
"Mary Sue Coleman"
Mary Sue Coleman (born October 2,1943 in Kentucky) is the cur-
rent president of the University of Michigan, having served since
2002. Coleman previously was president of the University of Iowa. She
is a memberof the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medi-
cine, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She received
her Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Grinnell College and
her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of North Carolina.
Coleman also serves on the Board of Directors of Johnson & Johnson
and Meredith Corporation.
Coleman followed her predecessor Lee Bollinger in supporting
affirmative action programs at Michigan. In November 2006, the
Michigan Civil Rights Initiative passed by a 16-percent margin, result-
ing in a constitutional amendment banningaracial preference in admis-
sions and hiring. Coleman has since stated she intends to challenge the
initiative and any potential implications it may have for the university
and its diversity.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual survey on
executive compensation in public universities, Coleman is the fifth-
highest paid university president of public universities in the nation.
