The

Executives

4

The administrators pictured on this page are seven of the
most influential people on campus. As the University's top
executives, they are responsible for the day-to-day operatign of
the University. Their decisions affect every student and
professor on campus.
Moving counter-clockwise, from the upper left they are:
" Harold Shapiro, University president. A noted economist,
Shapiro assumed the University's top post in 1980. One of
Shapiro's goals as president is to pare down the size of the
University. With declining support for education, the University
has become too large to sustain its quality, he says.
" Jon Cosovich, vice president for community relations. An
expert in private fund raising, Cosovich was hired last summer
to help the University tap the pocketbooks of the largest living
group of alumni in the world. His new campaign has set a goal
of $160 million in donations.
* Alfred Sussman, vice president for graduate studies and
research. Sussman is serving a six month interim term in this
office,'which was created this summer. He has been dean of the

Rackham Graduate School since 1974 and was named to the top
research post this summer when the two offices were combined.
* Richard Kennedy, vice president for state relations. Ken,
nedy is the University's liason with state government. He helps.
state leaders become more "aware" of the University'
"needs". As they become more aware, they will eagerly filL
those needs, or so the theory goes.
" James Brinkerhoff, vice president and chief financial of-
ficer. Brinkerhoff oversees the University's investments,
properties, business, an( financial affairs.
" Henry Johnson, vice president for student services. Johnsep"
is in charge of student activities and services such as Healt,
Services, counseling services, minority programs, and majgr
concerts.
" Billy Frye, vice president for academic affairs and provost.
Frye stands between the president and the rest of the vice
Presidents. As the architect of Shapiro's budget cutting plap
he has found himself in the center of one of the University/s
biggest controversies.
