Former Spanish mayor ends exile
CERCEDILLA, Spain (Ap) -
Bone - thin and pale, 77-year-
old former Mayor Protasio
Montalvo exchanged tears yes-
terday with friends who be-
lieved him dead during his
just-ended 38 years of hiding
to avoid Francoist political re-
tribution.
"There were only four or five
fascists in this town, but they
dominated everything until
now," the lifelong Socialist said.
HE WAS interviewed in the
small, neat house where he
lived secretly from 1939 -
when Gen. Francisco Franco's
forces defeated Republicans to
end the Spanish civil war -a
until Sunday.
"I dared not even walk about
this town, which has always
been a Socialist town, because
the Franco regime was looking
for officials from the Repub-
lican side," he said.
From 1939 until 1942, Mon-
talvo lived on the earthen
ground floor of his home with
the family's rabbits and chick-
ens. Upstairs, his family lived
by taking in washing and doing
