"There were only four or five fascists in this town, but they dominated everything until now," the lifelong Socialist said. HE WAS interviewed in the small, neat house where he lived secretly from 1939 - when Gen. Francisco Franco's forces defeated Republicans to end the Spanish civil war -a until Sunday. "I dared not even walk about this town, which has always been a Socialist town, because the Franco regime was looking for officials from the Repub- lican side," he said.
