Franco dying as new
leader gains support
MADRID, Spain (P)-Prince
Juan Carlos de Borbon, a pillarI
of silence during six years as
Gen. Francisco Franco's heir
designate, has many Spaniards
cheering his decisiveness after
little more than two weeks as
acting head of state.
The 82-year-old Franco, whose
month-long illness has put Car-
los in an uncomfortable political,
limbo, sank into his gravest
state yet yesterday with new
intern al bleeding. Informed
sources said tFranco's family
was ready to take him home to
Pardo Palace to die.
EVEN WITH Franco between
life and death, Juan Carlos has
given Spain's prosperous silent
majority the impression that he
is resolute and independent-

Most of the illegal political op-It
position, however, is set hardt
against him, reportedly ready tot
denounce him as soon as Francoi
dies and he is installed as king.
Juan Carlos, 37, made his win-1
ning move three days after tak-
ing over from Franco,, flying
to the Spanish Sahara to stiffens
army morale in advance of'
Moroccan King Hassan's peace-z
ful mass march into the mineral-
rich territory. Hassan's follow-
ers eventually retreated.
More importantly, the trip en-
deared the prince to the mili-
tary, whose support is crucial to
the political liberalization he
reportedly wants.
Predictably, Spain's controlled
press stretched the four-hour
visit to as many pages, liberally
scattered with photographs of
him in general's uniform, tower-
ing over his desert troops.
Liberals, 1 e s s predictably,
were enthusiastic, too.
SST gets second
wind from NASA
PRINCETON, N. J. (P) - The supersonic transport
jet, which died an early death in the United States, is alive
on the drawing boards.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration re-
searchers told an international conference of aviation ex-
perts here this week that NASA has made strides since
1972 in designing an improved "second generation" SST.
THEY CLAIM IT would fly better, make less noise and
carry commercial passengers for less than the premium
first-class fares that will be charged by the British and
French Concorde when that supersonic plane begins serv-
ice in January.
