Summary of Action Taken by Student
Government Council at Its Meeting of
November 7, 1962
Adopted: That SGC appoint the fol-
lowing two persons to serve as non-
Council student members of the Com-
mittee on Referral for a term of office
to end following the last Council meet-
ing, Spring, 1963.
Tom Moch, Al Haber.
Adopted: That SGC appropriate $30
from account F- to pay any expenses
of the Judiciary Study Committee.
Adopted: That SGC mandate its next
treasurer to pursue all methods of in-
quiry in determining if the Council
can get a larger grant from the stu-
dents' tuition fees.
Adopted: That SGC relay to the Elec-
tions Director the nature of our dis-
cussion on election advertising. Fur-
ther more that we request that if possi-
ble the subsequent ads be oriented to
the more serious nature of our up-
coming election.
Approved: Temporary recognition of
the University of Michigan Seventh
Day Adventist Student Association.
Adopted: SGC takes note of the fol-
lowing facts concerning housing dis-
crimination in the city of Ann Arbor.
1) On 10-9-62 the Ann Arbor City
Council set up a committee to study
fair housing legislation.
2) There are over 1,800 students, pro-
fessors ,medical students, researchers
and visitnig scholars from other lands
in Ann Arbor for academic work at the
University of Michigan. More than 400
of these persons have their wives and
children here with them. About half
of these visitors are "non-white" Mr.
Davis, in a letter to the Ann Arbor
Human Relations Commission June 7,
1962, states that "we recognize that
there is prejudice in Ann Arbor, but
we trye to 'cushion' the foreign scholar
from it."
3) There are over 200 Negro students
enrolled in the University of Michigan.
4) In a survey done by the SC Hu-
man Relations Board in the spring of
1960 it was found that 50 per cent of
the units tested would not accept non-
whites as tenants.
5) The Human Relations Commission
of the city of Ann Arbor found after
a lengthy study that serious discrim-
ination in housing exists in the city.
Consequently, SGOC, in reaffirming its
belief in the basic tenets of democra-
cy, and in reaffirming that discrimina-
tion based on race, religion, color.
creed, national origin or ancestry is
contrary to these tenets; and being re-
sponsible to its constituents and to the
University 'community, recommends the
following areas to be included in a
fair housing ordinance:
1) Publicly assisted housing - any
housing touched by city, state or Fed-
eral funds, whether the funds support
acquisition, construction, repair or
maintenance.
