Latin States
'Fight Back'
By JANET WOLFE ,
Latin America is beginning to
fight back_ after long being, su-
bordinated, to the United States,
Scott Nearing said in a speech
Wednesday co-sponsored by Chal-
lenge and the Unitarian Church.
Latin America, he said, has now,
"turned the tables" on the United
States, confronting us with the
dual challenge of fighting Ameri-
can imperialism and establishing a
socialist bloc of Latin American
countries to replace the Organiza-
tion of American States.
Foreign Powers.
In the "new bourgeois world ris-
ing up and completely over-
shadowing the old Latin American
order, Latin Americans are deter-
mined not to let profit-making
opportunities be grabbed up by
foreign powers." The.people detest
imperialism, economic infringe-
ment and unfair competition com-
ing from more mature economies
such as the United States, he said.
Use Monroe Doctrine
Turning to the political chal-
Menge; Nearing said that "until a
short time .ago, the Monroe Doc-.
trine and OAS were used by Wash-
ington to impose its will on Latin"
Americas. The Latin American'
bloc generally voted automatically
with the United States in the
O.A.."
Cuba in particular associates
the political challenge with the
Soviet Union, China nd Czecho-
slovakia, which have offered the
economic assistance the United
States too hastily withdrew.

Starts Work
On Dialects
By LINDA REISTMAN
"Work has begun on the enor-
mous task of cataloging over 300
dialects spoken in Yugoslavia,"
Prof. Pavle Ivic of the University
of Novi Sad, Yugoslavia said in a
lecture yesterday.
The task, which will take from
three to five years, will aid lin-
guistic study of the three major
Yugoslav languages; Serbo-Croa-
tian, Slovinian and Macedonian.
"However, Serbo-Coation is the
language used by the government
and the military, and is spoken by
the largest number of people as
well," he said.
Lists Peculiarities
Prof. Ivic listed four major pe-
culiarities which make these var-
iations of Serbo-Croatian much
greater than that of any other
existing European language.
"There is a high degree of dif-
ferentiation in - structure," Prof.
Ivic noted. "There are 29 con-
sonants in the Serbo-Croatian
language but only 14 of them are
present in every dialect. The vowel
system also poses a <problem be-
cause intonation varies in every
dialect."
Attributes Differences
This tremendous degree of struc-
tural difference can be attributed
to the great migrations of Serbo-
Croatian people in the 16th cen-
tury after the invasion of the
Turks. "The political division of
the states during this period is
also reflected in the dialects of
the language," Prof. Ivic said.
The dispersion of the three
major religious groups, Eastern
Orthodox, Roman Catholic and
Moslem, also contributed to the
distribution of the dialects," he
said.
