Liberty NO 8-7900 Yugoslavian Starts Work On Dialects By LINDA REISTMAN "Work has begun on the enor- mous task of cataloging over 300 dialects spoken in Yugoslavia," Prof. Pavle Ivic of the University of Novi Sad, Yugoslavia said in a lecture yesterday. The task, which will take from three to five years, will aid lin- guistic study of the three major Yugoslav languages; Serbo-Croa- tian, Slovinian and Macedonian. "However, Serbo-Coation is the language used by the government and the military, and is spoken by the largest number of people as well," he said. Lists Peculiarities Prof. Ivic listed four major pe- culiarities which make these var- iations of Serbo-Croatian much greater than that of any other existing European language. "There is a high degree of dif- ferentiation in - structure," Prof. Ivic noted. "There are 29 con- sonants in the Serbo-Croatian language but only 14 of them are present in every dialect.
