NEW YORK (4P)-Jack Molinas,
one time Ivy League star, was
sentenced to 10 to 15 years in
prison Monday for masterminding
a $70,000 fix of college basketball
games.
y His bribery of young athletes
brought renewed disgrace upon
the nation's most popular indoor
sport.

igan's George Pomey (44). en, 42, Molinas' chief lieutenant

in the stealthy plot to buy the
honor of young players. Hacken
got 7/ to eight years.
Also Sentenced
Also sentenced-to 2%/ to five
years-was Philip la Cort, 39, who
fronted for a Boston gambling
mob in the fix plot.
Some $70,000 in bribes were
paid from 1957 to 1961 to fix 43
games, involving college teams
from coast to coast. The ring also
offered an additional $75,000 for
fixes that fell through-some of
them because canny bookmakers
became suspicious and refused to
accept bets on the games.
Forty-seven players in 27 col-
leges were approached by Molinas'
ring, and 33 of them admitted
taking bribes. The players were
granted immunity from prosecu-
tion and helped the district attor-
ney's office break the scandal.
Bribes ranged from $75 to $4,750.
The 1961 crackdown on the
Molinas ring produced the second
big basketball scandal in a
decade.
Similar Plot
In 1951, a similar wide-scale
bribery plot affected 33 players
from seven schools, including~
some of the brightest stars in
college basketball. Head man in
that fix was Salvatore Sollazzo,
who was sent to prison for eight
to 16 years. In 1961, at the age
of 57, Sollazzo was deported to his
native Italy.
Judge Sarafite's harsh words
and the prison sentence caused
Molinas to throw back his head
in a gesture of despair.

start of the second semester. Mor-
rison, a veteran junior, was in-
eligible for this one contest as
an automatic consequence of re-
ceiving a match misconduct pen-
alty in the game Friday night.
This left Michigan with two de-
fensemen, Wayne Kartusch and
Don Rodgers. But even Kartusch
wasn't very healthy although he
spent more time on the ice than
he would normally. Kartusch suf-
fered a cracked jaw in Friday
night's game and played Saturday
with a plastic goalie's face mask.
Four Injured Wings
On the front line, no less than
four Wolverines had various in-
juries which hindered their ef-
fectiveness. Gordon Wilkie started
the game with a knee that he
sprained Friday night. Then in
Saturday's game he was hit in
the head by a hard shot and had
to leave the game for a while.
Captain Larry Babcock played
with sprained wrists. George For-
rest has a sprained knee. John
McGonigal pulled a leg muscle
after receiving ahard check and
left the game in the middle of
the third period.
