The struggle. for freedom~ for
Southern Negroes "is not a fight.
between the white and the Negro,
it is a fight between evil and
good," ?Curtis Ifayes emphasized.
Sunday afternoon at a, Voice Po-
litical Party meeting in the Con-
gregational Church.
Hayes, the Student Non-Violent
Coordinating Committee member
who goes on t; ial next Tuesday for
participation in the demonistra-
tions in McComb, 'Miss., told the
group that the Southern Negro
*is waiting for 'a spark of, encour-
agement. He said that to, achieve
dignity and equality for the 'Ne-
gro will be a long process.
Outlining action which- North~-
erns can take to aid the cause
of civil rights in Mississippi,
Hlayes said that protest telegrams
to President John F. Kennedy,
Gov, Ross Barnett of Mississippi
or the mayor of McComb and
nation-wide Publication 'of the' in-
cidents in the state would help.
Registration School
In BNCC'a Mississippi voter reg-
istration school, direct action, or-!,
ganized boycotts and 'workshops
teaching non-violenc~e and dem-
onstration techniques are being
used to promote freedom.
Participants In,these, activities
often lose their jobs and beatings
are not- unusual, Hayes said. Fear
is the main reason why ,Negro sup-
port of SNCC is. still relatively
small. However, Hayes added that
more progress has been made in
the last decade than .in the rest
of the century. There is virtually
no white support, he, said.
Hayes- emphasized that the
United States is not a true demo-
cracy when a segment of the popu-
lation' does not possess all the
rights and liberties enjoyed by the
rest., "It is everybody's fight be-
cause our nation will be abolished
if we fight, among ourselves," he
asserted,
Impending Trial
'telling of his impending trial,
the SNCC member said he faces
four charges for which. the maxi-
mum penalty could total three
years and two months in jail and
fines amounting, to $8,000.
F oreign Students
To- Discuss Berlin
A panel of foreign students from.
Brazil, India, Sweden and West
Germany will discuss the "Crisis
in ;Berlin" at 4:15 p.m. today in
Rm. 3R of the Michigan Union.
A survey of the 1958 college
graduation classes shows that ear-
ly marriage is becoming a serious
obstacle to the completion of
graduate study.
The study reports that despite
an increasing trend towards ad-
'vanced academic training, family
obligations of married students are
sdowing their' academic achieve-
ments.
Also found as a deterrent from
full-time graduate, study was the
abundance of good' Jobs for hold-
ers of bachelor's, degrees.
Necessary to Work
More than one-third of those
students receiving their bachelor's
degree in 1958 have since attended
graduate or professional school,
but only 10 per cent 'of these have
earned any advanced degree. Those
students who found it necessary
to work part-time in order to sup-
port a family were found to be
advancing slowly.
The survey was made public by
the Bureau= of Social Research
Inc., and is preliminary to a study
to be published in 1962 by the Na-
tional Science Foundation.
Questions from the survey were
answered by 40 thousand June
1958 graduates from more than 1,-
200 degree-granting institutions.
It was also found. that only a
small proportion of women takei
up advanced graduate study. 0:
