A survey of the 1958 college graduation classes shows that ear- ly marriage is becoming a serious obstacle to the completion of graduate study. The study reports that despite an increasing trend towards ad- 'vanced academic training, family obligations of married students are sdowing their' academic achieve- ments. Also found as a deterrent from full-time graduate, study was the abundance of good' Jobs for hold- ers of bachelor's, degrees. Necessary to Work More than one-third of those students receiving their bachelor's degree in 1958 have since attended graduate or professional school, but only 10 per cent 'of these have earned any advanced degree. Those students who found it necessary to work part-time in order to sup- port a family were found to be advancing slowly. The survey was made public by the Bureau= of Social Research Inc., and is preliminary to a study to be published in 1962 by the Na- tional Science Foundation. Questions from the survey were answered by 40 thousand June 1958 graduates from more than 1,- 200 degree-granting institutions.
