DETROIT (P)-Tom Matchick's
two-run homer with two out in
the ninth inning gave the Amer-
ican League leading Detroit Tigers
a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore
Orioles last night.
The rookie shortstop's second
major league homer capped a
three-run ninth innin$ comeback
by the Tigers, who had been held
to two hits by Wally Bunker and
Eddie Watt over the first eight.
After Jim Northrup led off the
ninth with a single and Al Kaline
walked, John O'Donoghue re-
placed Watt and Norm Cash
bunt'ed, into a force at second.
'Moe Drabowsky replaced O'Do-
noghue and got Bill Freehan to
hit into another force at second
as Northrup scored.
Matchick then slammed a 3-2
pitch into the upper right field
seats, pinning the Oioles with
their third straight setback.
The victory boosted the Tigers'
league lead to 1/2 games over idle
Cleveland and left the third place
Orioles 81/2 games back.
Bunker held the Tigers hitless
until the sixth, when Don Wert
walked and Dick McAuliffe
smacked a two-run homer. Watt
came on at that point and limit-
ed Detroit to a single by North-
rup until the ninth.
Frank Robinson put the Orioles
ahead 2-0 in the third with a
two-run homer off Mickey Lolich
&, d they scored twice in the sixth
on Brooks Robinson's double, a
single by Dave Johnson, Paul
Blair's sacrifice fly and a single
by Don Buford.

The fourth University sports
-clinic for area youngsters opens
Monday morning, with Gymnas-
tics coach Newt Loken and five
Michigan team members teaching
the relatively unknown sport to
boys aged 12-17..
Assisting Loken will be national
trampoline champion George
Huntzicker, parallel bar special-
ist Dick Richards, Sid Jensen,
Fred Rodney, and George Vanis.
Jensen and Rodney are expected
to be members of the Canadian
Olympic team, and Vanis is a
graduate assistant to Loken.
The five will provide demon-
strations of basic techniques,
throughout the week.
"Gymnastics is not a well-
known sport to most youngsters,"
says' Loken. "So ,we hope this,
clinic creates a little interest
among the boys.
"Although it takes. certain
physical attributes to be a suc-
cessful gymnast, I, feel that any
boy can benefit from the clinic,
especially in preparation for other
sports."
Loken, head gymnastics coach
for the past 21 years, has guided

Michigan to seven Big Ten titles
in the last eight years, in addition.
to the NCAA championship in
1963.

PHILADELPHIA - Wilt Cham-
berlain, gone from the Philadel-
phia basketball scene, took time
out Thursday to polish his image,
The 7-foot-1 cent r, in a tele-
phone interview fron New York,
said he wanted to give his version
of why he was traded to the Los
Angeles Lakers ,i. one of the big-
gest deals in the history of the
National Basketball Association.
Chamberlain said the Philadel-
phia 76ers' side of the story is
"slightly tainted."
"I understand it made me look
ungrateful," Chamberlain said.
"My side of the story is deserving
to be heard."
Chamberlain subsequently
claimed:
0 The 76ers asked for his sug-
gestion on a replacement for re-

signed-' Coach Alex Bannum and
later offered him the job as play-
er-coach.
0 He didn't price himself out
and force the 76ers to trade him
because he never asked for a spe-
cific figure.
* Owner Irv Kosloff's proposal
for a contract came out to less
money that Chamberlain made
last year.
* Kosloff led him to believe
he didn't want to x negotiate.
Chamberlain also agreed with the
theory that Kosloff "gave 'up"
after two meetings during a 19-
day period before the 76ers dealt
with Chamberlain to the Lakers
for Archie Clark, Darrall Imhoff
and Jerry Chambers.,
The 76ers had said Chamber-
lain, the game's greatest offensive
player, was dealt because he asked

SPORTS CLINIC:
Loken, gymnasts prepare
for area youth invasion

for too much in contract nego-
tiations. The superstar was said
to have wanted a three-year, mil-
lion dollar contract, plus-part-
ownership of the team.
"I was looking for something
futuristic," Chamberlain said.
"One way is having part of the
action. I didn't want to regard it
that, when my playing days are
over, I'm over.
"He-Kosloff--wouldn't enter-
tairi the thought. If he didn't
want me, to be. part of a team
that he's into for a hobby, I feel
kinda hurt by that.
"I didn't give him a figure; he
could've given me one per cent,
one-half of a per cent of the team
in good faith. He gave me the ex-
cuse this team is tied up in other
parts of his business and it wasn't
worth the paperwork.
"The whole thing with the ne-
gotiations was a bust."
Chamberlain. said that the
76ers' new cpach, Jack Ramsay
"didn't do anything to enhance
me staying here."
Ramsay] the team's general
manager, was appointed to suc-
ceed Hannum because Kosloff said
he preferred a nonplaying coach.
Chamberlain said he had an
idea some time ago that he might
be, traded.
"In talking last year, Kosloff
was only basically interested in
a one-year contract," Chamber-
lain said. "Owners are usually
interested in locking you up for
three, four or five years."
Chamberlain, who had been in-
strumental in the 76er's soaring
success of recent years is expect-
ed to help the Lakers develop into
a major powerhouse 'this season.

CLEVELAND UP) - Two Cleve-
land Browns veterans have been
placed on waivers, apparently over
a racial incident.
The National Football League
club has asked waivers on guard
John Wooten, 31, a nine-year vet-
eran and a Pro Bowl selection,
and defensive back Ross Fichtner,

been intended. He said the size
of the tournament had been cut
down and blacks invited in the
past had not socialized with white
players.
Cleveland Plain Dealer football
'writer Chuck Heaton said Modell
took the action of placing both on
waivers to keep peace within the
club.
