poignant tributes at the Fifth
Annual Rhythm and Blues
Foundation Pioneer Awards
at Roseland Ballroom in New
York City, New Yor on
March 2, 1994.
Designated as an official
part of Grammy Week, the
Foundation once again be­
stowed coveted Pioneer
Awards and a total of
$190,000 to ten individuals
and two groups in its celebra­
tion of one of America's mart
important art forms, rhythm
and blues music.

The largest philanthropic
organization of its kind, The
Rhythm and Blues Founda­
tion was established in 1988
to preserve and celebrate a
music that continues to en­
thr all and influence musi­
cians and laymen alike.
Since its inception it bas
distributed. over 800,000
through. ita-Pioaeer Awards
Program and over $270,000
through its Docil'omus Emer­
gency Financial Assistance
Program. With this year's
Pioneer Awards, the Founda-
tion reached the 1,000,000
benchmark in grants and
awards given through its pro­
grams.
The Foundation has also
expended its scholarly activi­
ties as well, conducting sev-
al oral histori hich will
be housed at the Smithsonian
Institution's National Mu­
seum of American History
and will be aired in-part, il)
collaboration with National
Public Radio.

Awards The Foundation also
produced a compilation CD,
in collaboration with Motown
Records, entitled Rites of
Rhythm and Blues, Volume
II. The 72-minute recording,
which contains songs from
each of the 1994 Pioneer
Award recipients, includes
"Let the Good Times Roll" by
Shirley & Lee; Jerry Lee Le­
wis' "Great Balls of'Fire" writ­
ten by Otis Blackwell and
''Yakety Yak" by the Coast­
ers. The CD will be available
in stor nationwide on May
3rd, 1994.

only losing valuable stock by
hangings, you are having upris­
ings, slaves are running a way,
your crops are sometimes lf3ft in
·the fields too long for maximum
profit, you suffer occasional
fires, your animals are killed,
gentlemen, ... you know what
your problems are; I don not
need to elaborate. I am not he
to enumerate your problems, I
am here to introduce you to a
method of solving them.
