U'u"'""u THE rgu
ment that our ie y' inability
to mo from a manufacturing
ba ed economy to a ervice
b ed economy has ted this
new pro on industry.
Th pri on industry is ab
sorbing lot of unemployed pe0-
ple left ov r from the closing of
manufacturing plants. High
American labor prices have led
big busin like Ford to other
countri arch of cheaper
labor.
Thi 10 of wages effects
whole communities from corner
supermarkets andlaundromats,
to the upkeep of buildings and
hom.
This massive unemployment
leads to massive im prisonment,
Ellis said. It is imperative to un
derstand imprisonment creates
busin for many people.
FIR T, THE FEDERAL
government has spent 5 billion
on new prisons. It costs $35,000
(a conservative number) to
house a prisoner for a year while
it costs 20,000 to attend even
th most expensive private col
leges, room and board included.
Imprisonment al 0 creat
revenue for:
- The American Association
of Architects. It costs 125,000
per cell. By comparison, most
people who are locked up do not
live in a house that costs
125,000.
- The Medical Profession -
Doctors, Dentists, Nurses sala
ries and medical supplies.
- Commissaries - Are like
mini-Farmer Jack's with in
flated prices.
- Hardware from handcuffs
to hammers.
- Uniforms, from tailoring to
cleaning.
- Waste Disposal
- Food Preparation
- Administrators to shuffie
papers.
- Academies - from teach
ers to social scientists 'Studying
prison population.
Also, there is a new trend to
use inmate labor. Corp Craft an
inmate labor corporation made
$127 million dollars in one year.
If the profit for Corp Craft was
only ten percent, someone or
some hing grossed $12 million
dollars. Inmates create every
thing from components for mis
siles to {nail bags.
This new imprisonment econ
omy is being built largely on the
backs of America's Black and
Latino population. The 13th
Amendment, which permits
slavery as punishment for
crime, has been invoked.
THE PRI ON YSTEM is
drawing in large numbers, cre
ating a slave labor force with no
righ . In all but four states, in
mates don't have the right to
vote, a right historically champi
oned as an inalienable right, in
extricable for a true democracy.
Once again America is using
Black people to build or rebuild
itself.
Therefore, N aney Reagan's
War on Drugs' i a war on Black
communities. It is a plot to en
sure the preservation of Amer-
