Natalie Cole added two
more awards to her collection
at the Sixth Annual Soul
Train Awards, held recently
in Los Angeles. Cole topped
off with both "jazz album"
and "album of the year" for
her "Unforgettable" LP.
The only other dual award
winner was Color Me Badd,
who walked away with song
of the year with "I Wanna Sex
You Up". This didn't go over
all that well with the
audience, who showed their
displeasure. by jeering the
group.
Other winners included
Public Enemy (rap album),
Li a Fischer (R&B ingle,
female), Keith Wa hington
(R&B single, male), Boyz II
Men (new artist), and Ham
mer (R&B music video).
The biggest applauses
however, went to Janet Jack-
on and Prince, who were
given special awards and
turned in some of the ho
most memorable momen .
The consensus, once
again, was that 55-year old
Don Cornelius had pulled off
the eason' be t and most
tightly-produced award
show.

"Ritual of Love" w th album
that would put ryn White to the
test.
After a ucce ful debut LP
featuring the rna h it "Super
woman", a lot of people were
wondering if Karyn w just amther
overnight singing sensation. But
with her number on hit "Romantic"
and h r current top-ten ingle "The
Way I Feel About You", Karyn is
proving she t got staying power,
and she' currently enjoying th fact
that her music reaches a wider
audience.
Karyn put herself on the line by co
writing and coproducing "Roman
tic" and "The Way I FeelAbout You"
as well as the majority of her album.
Her total involvement terns from
her philo ophy of being an arti t.
"Ritual of Love" showcases what
Karyn does be t-romantic ballads
and hot dance tunes. A self
described wild woman on stage,
Karyn' . more than ready to get back
out there and do her thing-but she's
not going out there unless she can do
it her way, "I don't want to tourjust
for the sake of touring," she says. ttl
want to be in demand."
Yet, it's just as important to her to
keep in touch with her roots. Says
Karyn: "I was able to have three top
ten pop hits last time, but I think it's
important to know your base. I
wouldn't forsake that. Because I
think for you to be happening pop,
you got to be happening Black. And
I think Black music is the
predominant music in the industry. "
The success o'f "Romantic" and
"The Way I Feel About You" is par
ticularly sweet for Karyn. Even
though she had two power
producers, Jimmy Jam and her hus
band Terry Lewis, doing her project,
WITH TWO ALBUMS and a
string of successful hit singles and a
busy career, she's getting to be so in
demand that it' hard to understand
how Karyn ha time for a personal
life. But it i important to her to
make time for her husband and fami
ly. "Im not really an industry kind of
person," she explains. "I want my
personal life to be successful as well.
Sometimes I'm really glad I live in
Minneapolis. It really keep me
balanced, We'repreny private, and
people would probably think we're
boring.
Karyn White and her music
children - Terry's on and daughter
and one son that they adopted jointly
-encouraged them to eek "refuge"
away from the glitz of Hollywood.
