But with her number on hit "Romantic" and h r current top-ten ingle "The Way I Feel About You", Karyn is proving she t got staying power, and she' currently enjoying th fact that her music reaches a wider audience. Karyn put herself on the line by co­ writing and coproducing "Roman­ tic" and "The Way I FeelAbout You" as well as the majority of her album. Her total involvement terns from her philo ophy of being an arti t. "Ritual of Love" showcases what Karyn does be t-romantic ballads and hot dance tunes. A self­ described wild woman on stage, Karyn' . more than ready to get back out there and do her thing-but she's not going out there unless she can do it her way, "I don't want to tourjust for the sake of touring," she says. ttl want to be in demand." Yet, it's just as important to her to keep in touch with her roots. Says Karyn: "I was able to have three top ten pop hits last time, but I think it's important to know your base. I wouldn't forsake that. Because I think for you to be happening pop, you got to be happening Black. And I think Black music is the predominant music in the industry. " The success o'f "Romantic" and "The Way I Feel About You" is par­ ticularly sweet for Karyn. Even though she had two power producers, Jimmy Jam and her hus­ band Terry Lewis, doing her project, WITH TWO ALBUMS and a string of successful hit singles and a busy career, she's getting to be so in demand that it' hard to understand how Karyn ha time for a personal life. But it i important to her to make time for her husband and fami­ ly. "Im not really an industry kind of person," she explains. "I want my personal life to be successful as well. Sometimes I'm really glad I live in Minneapolis. It really keep me balanced, We'repreny private, and people would probably think we're boring. Karyn White and her music children - Terry's on and daughter and one son that they adopted jointly -encouraged them to eek "refuge" away from the glitz of Hollywood. AND.RE HFARD:' First off, I was an artist back in '84. In '85 I left the rappin' field alone (laughs). In '87 I wrote a ong for Sweet Sensa­ tion on the Epic record label. In '89 I started a record label called Kenny Boom Records. In '90 I igned J to the D to Light Records. But finally at the s rt of '91 I'met Dexter Curry &. Orl ndo Colvin. We fonned C &. C Records along lth the promotion company I had earlier. R: What artists do you have on your record label? DEXTER CURRY: Mac 10, Wes Chill, Jack Fro t and B.A.N.M.E, B-Def, Jay Lyle (former lead inger of chap r 8) and last but not lea t a comedian by the name of D Harris.
