Some U.S.

Interest'
Remember those U.S.
Savings Bonds you bought or
• that were given to you? Is is
• important to know the date
• that they were purchased.
.. Some of the older bonds are
It no longer earning interest.
If you have SeriesB U.S.
Savings Bonds that are 40
years old, (at pre ent this is
. any bond issued prior to
August, 1950) these bonds
are no longer earning inter
est. You will not earn any ad
ditional interest by holding
these bonds any longer.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Check the issue dates of all
your U.S. Savings Bonds. It
is a very good idea to keep a
record of each bond you own.
You will find the issue date in,
-: the top right hand corner of
- your bond. The month and
: year that the bond was pur
• chased will be listed there.
• If that month and year are
: prior to August of 1950, then
you should do one of two
: things. ,
Fir r, if your bonds were
: issued prior to August 1949,
.. then you only option' is to
: redeem these bonds. This can
: be done at your local bank.
Second, if you have bond
that are older than 40 year
but le than 41 years old,
you may exchange the e
bonds for U.S. Series HH
bonds.

Cervical Cancer and
African American Women
All women who are 18 or
over, or women who are sexual
ly active, are at risk for cervical
Alrican American women are
roughly three times more likely
to develop cervical cancer and
more than twice a likely to die
from it than white women.
The risk of developing cervi
cal cancer increases with age,
especially in women pa t their
childbearing years.
Women with less education
- of race - have a higher risk
of dying from this disease than
do women who are COllege
graduates.
Benefit. of Early Detection
The Pap test is inexpensive,
quick and painless. It can show
the presence of infection, in
flammation, abnormal cells, or
cancer in the cervix.
With early detection, most
cervical cancer deaths are
preventable.

ly true for older women who
have gone through the change of
life (menopause) and are at
higher risk for cervical cancer.
One an abnormality is
detected in the cervix, followup
care is extremely important. If
changes in the cervix prove to be
cancerous, then prompt treat
ment is needed to keep the dis
ease from spreading to other
parts of the body.
Regular PAP teete

When detected early, cervical
cancer is highly curable, The
Pap test is the best method for
detecting cervical cancer early.
Since phystcians began using
the Pap test 40 years ago, it has
helped save thousands of
women's lives. It could save
your life.

local health departments also
offer these tests, usually at low
cost.
Getting the Pap test is par
ticularly important for African
American women, who are three
times more likely to get cervical
cancer and twice as likely to die
from it than white women.
If the results of the Pap tests
are abnormal, you will be
notified by letter or phone and
asked to contact your doctor.
Making that phone call to your
doctor to followup is one of the
,most important things you can
do for yourself. Without this
followup, the benefits of finding
a problem early will be lost.
Dr. 'Charles Smart, Chief of
the National Cancer of the Na-·
tional Cancer Institute's (NCI)
Early Detection Branch, says
that "for women 18 years or
older, or those who are sexually
active, getting a Pap test every
year is the bes t way to find cer
vical cancer early. This is par
ticularly true for older women
who have gone through the

PREGNANCYAND WEIGHT GAIN
By Rkbard H. Schwarz, MD.
......... !!IIt, Tbe CDIJeae of
o ud
consume 3.00 more calories a day
during pregnancy. Eating nutritious
snacks is a good way to get these extra
calories. Fruit, yogurt, cereal, pizza,
and cheese are healthy sn D. Try to
avoid empty extras such soda,
potato chips, and candy.
Eating the right kinds of food i
important as gaining the proper
amount of weight. The key to eating
right is choosing a variety of foods
from the four basic food groups: 1)
meat, poultry, fish, eggs nuts, and
beans; 2) fruits and vegetables; 3)
whole-grain or enriched bread and
cereal' and 4) mille and mille prod
ucts. You should include foods from
each of these group in your daily
meal and naclcs. Some women feel
more comfortable, especially ring
the later stages of pregnancy, eating
six mall meals day instead of
three larger ones.
ou should be able to get all of the
extra vitamin and mineral required
during pregnancy through a balanced
diet. Sometim , however, there are
pecial reasons why you can't get all of
th nutrients from your diet and your
doctor may recommend upplements
especially iron.
Developing the right eating habi
and Iy gaining igbt during
pregnancy is one of the mo t impor
tant things you can do for the health
of your unborn baby. . .....
Usually it makes sense to watch
your weight, but when you are preg
nant it is important to chanae your
focus and to concentrate on eating
nutritious foods and gradually gain
ing weight.
A woman of normal weight should
pin about 30 pounds during preg
nancy. Women who are underweight
should gain about 34 pounds, and
obese women should gain about 20.,
Women with twin pregnancies
should gain much as 40 pounds.
The pounds that you gain will
enable your body to nourish the
developing baby. About 7 pounds go
to maternal stores (fat, protein, and
other nutrients), 8 to increased blood
and fluid volume, to the breasts, and
2 to the uterus. The niotic fluid
makes up about 2 pounds and the
placenta (the . ue connectin the
mother and baby) about 1 'h. On
, the baby weighs about 7'h
pounds. ,
Women who do not gain enough
weight during pregnancy are more
likely to haYe mall ies. Babies
who are low birth weiaht (born weigh
ing than S'h pounds) often have
problem adjusting to life ou . d of
the uterus. Low birth weight is one of
the bi t ri facto for infant
death.
To pin the proper amount of'
weiaht, the man needs to
