The risk of developing cervi­ cal cancer increases with age, especially in women pa t their childbearing years. Women with less education - of race - have a higher risk of dying from this disease than do women who are COllege graduates. Benefit. of Early Detection The Pap test is inexpensive, quick and painless. It can show the presence of infection, in­ flammation, abnormal cells, or cancer in the cervix. With early detection, most cervical cancer deaths are preventable. This is particular­ ly true for older women who have gone through the change of life (menopause) and are at higher risk for cervical cancer. One an abnormality is detected in the cervix, followup care is extremely important. If changes in the cervix prove to be cancerous, then prompt treat­ ment is needed to keep the dis­ ease from spreading to other parts of the body. Making that phone call to your doctor to followup is one of the ,most important things you can do for yourself. Without this followup, the benefits of finding a problem early will be lost. Fruit, yogurt, cereal, pizza, and cheese are healthy sn D. Try to avoid empty extras such soda, potato chips, and candy. Eating the right kinds of food i important as gaining the proper amount of weight. The key to eating right is choosing a variety of foods from the four basic food groups: 1) meat, poultry, fish, eggs nuts, and beans; 2) fruits and vegetables; 3) whole-grain or enriched bread and cereal' and 4) mille and mille prod­ ucts. You should include foods from each of these group in your daily meal and naclcs. Some women feel more comfortable, especially ring the later stages of pregnancy, eating six mall meals day instead of three larger ones. ou should be able to get all of the extra vitamin and mineral required during pregnancy through a balanced diet. Sometim , however, there are pecial reasons why you can't get all of th nutrients from your diet and your doctor may recommend upplements especially iron.
