Prescription Drug Studies: 'Four Phases
There are four teps or pha e of te ting that all prescription drugs must
undergo before they are 'approved by the United States Food and Drug Ad
ministration (FDA) for general 11 e by physicians and other prescribers.
Before phase one the drug mu t be tested in animals. This process
determines whether or not the drug is safe and effective in test animals. It
may take as much as two to three years to determine drug safety in nonhu
man subjects.
.
Phase one i the fir t testing of the drug in humans. During this phase,
researcher look at how the drug is absorbed, stored, distributed, and
eliminated. Side effects are checked for in this phase. Phase two tests for
the effectivenes and the safety of the drug in humans. Phases one and two
are conducted on groups of up to 300 individuals and may take up to three
or four years to complete;"
During phase three, the drug is evaluated in as many as 3,000 subjects.
This is the last phase required by the FDA. If the drug is approved, it may
be promoted and pre cribed. Phase four studies occur after the FDA has
approved the drug for routine use. Ac ording to a recent study at Tofts
University, it take .on average, 12 year and $231 million to conduct the
Iir t three phase of study leading to approval by the FDA.
