Parents are the Heroes
in Orthodontics
Ask the Orthodontist
By far the individuals with the most unappreciated role in the orthodontic treatment of
a child are the parents. It is the mom or dad that bears the responsibility for making
the appointment, bringing the child to the appointment, coordinating schedules, and
usually being unappreciated in the process. Look at usually any mother’s (and many
times fathers) planners and it is amazing that an additional monthly commitment is
even workable.

Who picks the child up from soccer or dance or whatever and rushes to get to the
orthodontic appointment on time? Who gets the phone call at the most inopportune
time and must change their schedule at the last minute to bring the child in for some
unexpected emergency? Who hears the words “I can’t fi nd my retainer”? Who worries
about the child not brushing well enough, and who gets the complaining that something
else is more important? The answer to all these questions is mom or dad. The parent
also is the one who hears the gripes and woes of the patient.

Parents are the “Heroes” of the orthodontist. It is the parent that must put the child
before all else, and make a fi nancial commitment because they know whether their
child wants braces or not, it is the “right” thing to do.

That is one reason why we had the expansion of our offi ce done. We want to make
things easier for mom or dad and have an environment that shows we care and
appreciate the parent. The parent is the “unsung” hero of orthodontics and we tip our
hats to the moms and dads who make our job easier. And lastly, here’s something you
rarely hear, “THANK YOU!”
