DAVID LURIE
BALE, 64, died
suddenly June 20,
2016, while playing
basketball in
Toronto, Ontario.
Dave was born
in Detroit Nov. 17,
Bale
1951.
He attended
Mumford and
graduated from Southfield High
School and Michigan State University.
As a child, Dave could name every U.S.
president; his interest in government
brought him to Washington, D.C.,
as a congressional aide. His passion
for politics and current affairs fueled
his pursuits as a radio journalist and
earned him awards at CHFI, 98.1 FM
in Toronto and Kol Israel in Jerusalem,
where he lived for nine years.
His work as owner and director
of Camp Tamakwa brought him to
Toronto in the early 1980s, where
he met the love of his life, Janie, and
where he is buried. They married
and have two children, Ari and Yafa.
Most recently, Dave was the director
of marketing and communications at
Toronto’s Leo Baeck Day School.
His great sense of community led
to his leadership at Beit Halochem
Canada, Paul Penna Downtown
Jewish Day School and at Temple Sinai
Congregation. He was most tranquil
while paddling his red Chestnut canoe
on the lakes in Algonquin Park.
Dave loved the company of family
and friends, and he was a mentor to
many. When you look up “mentsh”
in the dictionary it says, “Please use
Yiddish dictionary.” That word and
humor will make you think of David
Bale. He was always a mentsh and
will be missed by anyone who had
the good fortune to cross his path.
Dave was predeceased by his par-
ents, Joseph and Trudy Bale.
