Jewelers in Farmington Hills.
Unless a couple buys a ring from a
jewelry display case, some customizing
is required to adapt their desired setting
to the stone they purchase. According to
several Detroit-area jewelers, a custom-
designed ring does not necessarily
cost more than a ring bought from a
manufacturer. Jewelers often make a
wax sample before casting the ring. They
recommend allowing at least one month
for a custom-designed ring, although the
process can sometimes be completed in
a week.
Local jewelers agree that the most
popular ring style is the halo — a ring
with one diamond surrounded by
smaller stones. That creates an “antique-
looking ring, often with a cushion or
round-shaped stone,” explains Chris
Schornack of MB Jewelry Design in
Bloomfield Township.
Prices for engagement rings range
widely — depending mainly on the size
and type of diamond — anywhere from
$1,500 to $20,000 and up. Wedding
bands typically cost much less and many
couples choose engagement/wedding

one tradition continues — the diamond
engagement ring. Mark Tapper of
Tapper’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry, says
that 99 percent of first-time buyers want
a diamond engagement ring.
The desire for bling has expanded to
wedding rings as well. Luba Matison of
Greis Jewelers in Farmington Hills says
that many women want a diamond wed-
ding band, often because they wear it
without their engagement ring.
Engaged couples can choose among
several ring materials, many diamond
cuts and sizes, and myriad styles for the
ring setting. While most local jewelers
offer extensive choices through popular
national ring manufacturers, couples
often seek something unique.
“They’ll bring in a picture of a friend’s
piece or something from the Internet,
or blend two or three rings into one
design. You reinvent the style and look,”
says Rob Weinberger of Emery’s Creative
