Several veteran Detroit-area jewelers
share some observations about today’s
engagement and weddings rings:

EMERY’S CREATIVE JEWELERS
At Emery’s, a majority of engagement
rings are custom-made or purchased
from a manufacturer with limited retail
distribution. “Customers usually come
in with a budget. A typical ring is white
gold with a halo, often with diamonds
along the shank,” says Weinberger, co-
owner. He adds that wedding rings,
especially for men, are increasingly being
fabricated in alternative rather than pre-
cious metals. Titanium, tungsten, car-
bide and stainless steel are more durable
than platinum and cost less.

GREIS JEWELERS
“The fashion is a diamond halo or
double halo as it gives the appearance of
a larger stone. For the last five years, the
style has been ornate, more traditional
than modern. There are so many choices
that it is hard for people to decide,” says
Luba Matison, co-owner. About half of
their customers want custom-designed
rings, often bringing photos of styles
they like or a drawing if it’s complicated.
Men typically choose a platinum wed-
ding band, often with a matte finish;
some have a shiny rim. Women’s wed-
ding bands usually have diamonds, she
says.

MB JEWELRY DESIGN
MB Jewelry makes all of its rings rather
than offering nationally branded rings,
according to owner Chris Schorneck. “It’s
a custom store. We try to give custom-
ers what they want, but we’ll tell them
if it won’t work,” he explains. Customers
often want the halo look, and some rings
are designed so that the diamonds are
visible on the sides but don’t continue
along the back of the ring. When choos-
ing the ring material, he recommends
taking into account the wear and tear
the ring is likely to encounter. “Platinum
wears well, but it’s softer,” he says.

TAPPER’S DIAMONDS
& FINE JEWELRY
Mark Tapper, co-owner, says that about
half of their rings are custom made. “If
they want something different — maybe
something that reminds them of a ring,
maybe their grandmother’s ring, we
work with them. There is no additional
charge for the design work,” he says. He
recommends selecting the ring style first
and then a diamond that fits the custom-
er’s budget. Round brilliant and cushion-
cut diamonds are particularly popular.
During the past two years, Tapper has
noticed a growing interest in delicate set-
tings such as floral patterns.
