According to several Detroit-area jewelers, a custom- designed ring does not necessarily cost more than a ring bought from a manufacturer. Jewelers often make a wax sample before casting the ring. They recommend allowing at least one month for a custom-designed ring, although the process can sometimes be completed in a week. Local jewelers agree that the most popular ring style is the halo — a ring with one diamond surrounded by smaller stones. That creates an “antique- looking ring, often with a cushion or round-shaped stone,” explains Chris Schornack of MB Jewelry Design in Bloomfield Township. Prices for engagement rings range widely — depending mainly on the size and type of diamond — anywhere from $1,500 to $20,000 and up.
