Based on the 1985 gorgeously illustrated,
Caldecott Medal-winning children's book
The Polar Express (set partly in Grand
Rapids), by Michigan-born and U-M and
Rhode Island School of Design gradu-
ate Chris Van Allsburg, the work was
transformed into an equally magical film
by Robert Zemeckis in 2004. The Polar
Express: An IMAX 3D Experience has
become a favorite holiday tradition at
Dearborn's the Henry Ford IMAX Theatre
— the largest in Michigan. Guests who
come to any show dressed in pajamas
receive a free small popcorn. Nov.
25-Dec. 31. $9.75-$13.75. (800) 835-5237;

Opening yesterday, Nov. 25, was Victor
Frankenstein, a new take on the classic
horror tale. In this version, Igor (Daniel
Radcliffe, 26) is the brilliant protege of
Dr. Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy)
and they share a noble vision of aiding
humanity via their research into immor-
tality. But Victor's experiments go horribly
too far and only Igor can bring his friend
back from the brink of madness and
save him from his monstrous creation.
Radcliffe, who recently got a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, is high on this
film, promoting it in a blitz of media
interviews. In these same interviews, he
disclosed that the end of the Harry Potter
films led him to sow some wild oats,
including drinking too much — but he's
now completely sober.
Victor F was written by Max Landis,
30, the son of director John Landis (Blues
Brothers, American Werewolf in London),
65, and John's wife of 35 years, Deborah
Nadoolman, 62, an Oscar-nominated
costume designer. Max penned Chronicle
(2012), a surprisingly big sci-fi hit — but
didn't fare as well with American Ultra,
which he also wrote. It opened in August
to mixed reviews and didn't earn much.
The new comedic Netflix series Master
of None was created by, and is written by,
Indian-American Aziz Ansari and Chinese-
American Alan Wang. The first season
centers around Dev (Ansari), a first-gen-
eration Indian-American trying to make it
as an actor. There are interesting parallels
between how Dev, a pretty assimilated
American, navigates the wider American
world, and the Jewish experience in over-
whelmingly non-Jewish American society
— being mostly comfortable with the
dominant culture yet still often standing
outside it.
The first season features H. Jon
Benjamin, 49, as Benjamin, Dev's friend
and co-star in a movie they hope will
