here will be a new champion in
the Inter-Congregational Men's
Club Summer Softball League.
Defending champion, regular-season
winner and top playoff seed Temple Israel
No. 1 and second-seeded Adat Shalom
Synagogue No. 1 went down swinging last
Sunday on the first day of the playoffs,
opening the door for an intriguing finish
to an unpredictable post-season.
It'll be Congregation Shaarey Zedek
vs. Temple Israel No. 2 and Temple Shir
Shalom vs. Adat Shalom No. 2 in the
playoff semifinals at 9 a.m. this Sunday
at Community Sports Park in West
Bloomfield, the league's home.
The two semifinal winners will meet
for the league championship and the two
losers will play for third place at 10:20 a.m.
To say Shaarey Zedek and Adat Shalom
No. 2 are surprise semifinalists is an
understatement. They had a combined
9-21 record during the regular season.
Eight games were played last Sunday
as the playoffs began with two rounds.
The top four seeds received byes into the
second round.
In the early games, Shaarey Zedek
defeated Temple Beth El, 14-10; Adat
Shalom No. 2 defeated Temple Israel No. 3,
11-3; Congregation Shir Tikvah defeated
Bais Chabad Torah Center, 7-6; and
Temple Kol Ami defeated Congregation
Beth Ahm, 12-2.
Shaarey Zedek and Adat Shalom No. 2
earned berths in the semifinals by defeat-
ing Adat Shalom No. 1, 8-7, and Temple
Israel No. 1, 6-5, respectively.
Shir Shalom defeated Shir Tikvah, 4-1,
and Temple Israel No. 2 defeated Kol Ami,
6-3, in the other second-round games.
Here are the 12-team league's final reg-
ular-season standings: Temple Israel No. 1,
12-3; Adat Shalom No. 1, 11-3-1; Temple
Israel No. 2, 11-3-1; Shir Shalom, 11-4;
Shir Tikvah, 9-4-2; Beth Ahm, 9-4-2; Beth
El, 6-8-1; Adat Shalom No. 2, 6-9; Temple
Israel No. 3, 4-11; Shaarey Zedek, 3-12;
Kol Ami, 2-12-1; and Bais Chabad, 2-13.

player who died in 2011.
Each team selects an award nominee,
and the league winner is chosen randomly
"because there's no good way to pick a
winner and all the candidates are deserv-
ing:' said Chuck Freedman, one of the
league's coordinators.
Elon Friedman, Temple Israel No. 3
manager, said Kallen was the logical
choice for his team's nominee.
"We moved Brad around the field wher-
ever he was needed, and he was happy to
do it to help the team," Friedman said. "He
played in the infield and outfield; he was
our catcher."
Friedman said he found out in advance
that Kallen was selected for the award and
he informed Kallen's family, who turned
out in force for the ceremony.
Kallen's mother is pioneer female box-
ing manager Jackie Kallen.
Each manager spoke for approximately
a minute about his team's nominee. Each
nominee received a certificate and Kallen
took home a trophy.
The other nominees were Michael
Bloch (Shir Shalom); Steve Edelman (Beth
Ahm); Howard Fershtman (Shir Tikvah);
Jeff Diskin (Adat Shalom No. 1); David
Jacobs (Shaarey Zedek); Howard Katz (Kol
Ami); Jeff Katzen (Temple Israel No. 2);
Bruce Kaye (Temple Israel No. 1); Richard
Lugar (Bais Chabad); Marvin Rubin (Beth
El); and Marc Wasser (Adat Shalom No. 2).
This was the second season for
Temple Israel No. 3, a team made up
mostly of fathers of daughters in the
Temple Israel preschool.
After winning only one game last year,
Temple Israel No. 3 won four this sum-
mer "and we lost by only one run in four
or five other games," Friedman said.
