espite the snowfall, more than
400 tasters attended Temple
Shir Shalom's recent fourth
annual Chicken Soup Cook Off, a fun-
draiser this year for I Am My Brother's
Keeper, a homeless shelter in Detroit,
and also for the temple's religious
school and young adult activities.
"It's grown every year," said Andre
Douville, Shir Shalom's executive direc-
tor. "We attract a lot of members and
non-members:'
Nineteen entrants competed in two
categories: amateur and professional.
There were three soup categories: mat-
zah ball, chicken noodle and creative/
contemporary. They were judged by
eight judges, including JN columnist
Danny Raskin, sponsor Fran Bell and
board members and volunteers. In
addition, a People's Choice Award was
chosen by tasters and an award was
given for best decorated table.
Winners in the amateur division
were Jaden Bayer, Michelle Bayer and
Ken Feldman, Best Matzah Ball; Amy
Weber, Best Chicken Noodle; and
Katie and Jeremy Brown, Best Creative
Chicken Soup. Professional winners
were Steve's Deli, Best Matzah Ball
and Best Chicken Noodle, and Hiller's
Markets for "Chicken Gyro:' Best
Creative Chicken Soup. The Browns
won for Best Decorated Table; and the
People's Choice Award went to Sharry
Fealk.
Event Chairs were Rebecca Bershad,
Terri Cooper and Debbie Emmer.
