Mark Cohen: Overweight Sensation: The
Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman
Alan Sherman sold 3 million albums in
less than a year, was friends with some of
the biggest names in Hollywood, and even
had President John Kennedy singing his
tunes. But by the time he was 49, Sherman
was dead and largely forgotten. Overweight
Sensation is the story of a kid who wrote
song parodies that were distinctly Jewish
but gained universal appeal. It tells of
his difficult beginnings, crazy college
days, wacky antics as a game-show host
and both familiar ("Hello Muddah, Hello
Faddah") and unknown songs.
Tickets: $10 ICC members/$12 nonmem-
bers. (248) 661-1900.

Seth Lipsky: The Rise of Abraham Cahan
Abraham Cahan was a revolutionary
when he escaped from Lithuania and came
to the U.S. Once in New York, he became
one of the most influential figures of the
early 20th century, serving as co-founder
of the Yiddish newspaper the Jewish Daily
Forward, which played a key role in teach-
ing new immigrants about life in America.

Joshua Safran: Free Spirit: Growing Up
On the Road and Off the Grid
Joshua Safran's childhood was like a
roller coaster. When he was 4, his mother
took him in search of utopia. Along the
way, they met a cast of oddball characters
and lived in shacks and teepees. It was
sometimes fun, sometimes dark, like when
his mother wed an abusive guerrilla/poet.
After a chance comment, Safran learned
that he is Jewish. Today, he is an attorney
and writer, who is featured in the award-
winning documentary Crime After Crime.
2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11 (WB)
Crime After Crime (2011), with a post-
film discussion with Joshua Safran
The Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival
presents a screening of Crime After Crime,
with a post-film discussion with Joshua
Safran, who was co-counsel on the case.
This acclaimed film tells the story of
Debbie Peagler, a woman falsely accused
of murder, whose defense team, including
Safran, worked pro bono.
All film tickets are $12. (248) 661-1900.

Jeremy Dauber: The Worlds of Sholem
Aleichem: The Remarkable Life and
Afterlife of the Man Who Created Tevye
Sholem Rabinovitch was such a beloved
author that more than 150,000 people
attended his funeral in 1916. Known as
Sholem Aleichem, he created one of the
world's most beloved characters, Tevye,
whose bittersweet days in the shtetl are
recounted in dozens of stories, plays and
films. Sholem Aleichem's own life was wor-
thy of a book; he grew up the son of a suc-
cessful businessman and then became desti-
tute. He was a tutor who married his student,
became wealthy again and then poor again
before finally establishing a reputation as a
great writer throughout Europe and the U.S.

Rockefeller, Becoming Myself: A Memoir
Eileen Rockefeller, founding chair of the
Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisers and the

of six children and one of 22 cousins who
grew up in extreme wealth and privi-
lege. But, what of an identity outside her
famous name? Today, married to a Jewish
man, she'll share what she has learned.

My Family's Holocaust Secret
A gripping story of the author's aunt, a
Jewish dance instructor who was betrayed
to the Nazis by the two men she loved.
Yet she managed to survive World War II
by teaching dance to the SS at Auschwitz.
Her epic life becomes a window into the
author's own past and the key to discover-
ing his Jewish roots.
some states; the rest would be easy, right?
Not exactly. Now the two had to deal with
the really difficult stuff, like which relatives
to invite to the wedding, what to wear, what
to eat, and what to do with all that family
baggage, including a history of arms smug-
glers, prisoners and adulterers. Lawfully
Wedded Husband begins as a book about

The first problem was simply finding a
state where they could be legally married.
Of course, Joel Derfner and his partner
knew that would be tough. But then — it
happened. Gay marriage became legal in
