But by the time he was 49, Sherman was dead and largely forgotten. Overweight Sensation is the story of a kid who wrote song parodies that were distinctly Jewish but gained universal appeal. It tells of his difficult beginnings, crazy college days, wacky antics as a game-show host and both familiar ("Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah") and unknown songs. When he was 4, his mother took him in search of utopia. Along the way, they met a cast of oddball characters and lived in shacks and teepees. It was sometimes fun, sometimes dark, like when his mother wed an abusive guerrilla/poet. After a chance comment, Safran learned that he is Jewish. Known as Sholem Aleichem, he created one of the world's most beloved characters, Tevye, whose bittersweet days in the shtetl are recounted in dozens of stories, plays and films. Sholem Aleichem's own life was wor- thy of a book; he grew up the son of a suc- cessful businessman and then became desti- tute.
