T
he Jewish Community Center
of Greater Ann Arbor will
celebrate its 26th anniversary
with its annual Jewish Book Festival,
running Nov. 6-17 at the JCC. This
year's event includes seven Lunch
with the Author events, evening and
Sunday programs, a Local Authors
Brunch, a Night at the O.K. Corral, an
evening with the Frankel Center for
Judaic Studies Scholars, a special chil-
dren's program honoring Sammy the
Spider's birthday and a Comedy Night.
All author presentations are free and
open to the community. Lunch may be
purchased for Lunch with the Author
events for $10 in advance or $15 at the
door.
While Ann Arbor shares some writ-
ers with Detroit's Jewish Book Fair,
there are several authors and events
that are unique to Ann Arbor.
Shelley Frisch, the translator of
German author Reiner Stach's new-
est biography, Kafka: The Years of
Insight, opens this year's festival on
Wednesday, Nov. 6, at noon. The
book tells the story of the final years
of Kafka's life, from 1916-1924. The
riveting narrative reflects the latest
findings on Kafka, zooming in for
extreme close-ups of his personal life
and works, then pulling back for pan-
oramic shots of a wider world scarred
by World War I, disease and inflation.
On Friday, Nov. 8, at noon, Sarah
Erdreich will discuss Generation Roe:
Inside the Failure of the Pro-Choice
Movement. In this provocative book,
Erdreich tells the stories of those who
perform abortions, outlines the battles
against abortion rights and unabash-
edly presents abortion as a fundamen-
tal right.
Children of all ages are invited
to celebrate book character Sammy
Spider's birthday at 9 a.m. Sunday,
Nov. 10. The program will include a
pancake breakfast, crafts, storytelling
with guest speakers and more. The
cost is $5 per person.
At 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, author
Ann Kirschner will speak about her
book, Lady at the O.K. Corral: The
True Story of Josephine Marcus Earp,
the fascinating, never-before-told story
of the Jewish woman from New York
who became the common-law wife of
famed Western lawman and gambler
Wyatt Earp. For this "Night at the
O.K. Corral;' guests are encouraged to
accessorize in cowboy/cowgirl attire
and be entered into a drawing to win
prizes. The program is free.
On Monday, Nov. 11, at noon,
authors Michal Woll and Jon M.
Sweeney will discuss their book,
Mixed-Up Love: Relationships, Family
and Religious Identity in the 21st
Century. Sweeney, a Catholic spiritual
adviser, and Woll, an ordained rabbi,
explore the challenges of being in a
"mixed- up" relationship in their own
lives, as husband and wife and as par-
ents raising their daughter as a Jew.
A community favorite, the Local
Authors Brunch, will take place at
10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. This event
will feature authors Dr. Richard Adler
(Cholera in Detroit: A History); Brad
Axelrod (Dissertation Solutions); Ruth
Behar (Traveling Heavy); Miriam
Brysk (Amidst the Shadows of Trees:
A Holocaust Child's Survival in the
Partisans); Raymond De Young (The
Localization Reader: Adapting to the
Coming Downshift); Julie Feldman
(Grocery Makeover); Miriam Driker
Karp (Painting Zaidy's Dream); Mitch
Rycus (T: A Novel); and Joan Zald
(A Call From Egypt). Brunch may be
purchased for $7 in advance or $10 at
the door. ❑
