because "it's a lot of fun and great for
health"
Avi Gruber is 63. Originally from
Israel, he now lives in Beverly Hills and
is the owner of Avi's Auto Care. Avi has
been playing soccer all his life and is the
father of Jordan Gruber, who plays pro-
fessionally in Israel.
Kestutis Miliunas, 59, lives in
Northville Township. Since 1984, he has
been the head of Amber Auto Sales. As
soon as he heard about the team, he
couldn't wait to join, he said.
Along with Kostukovsky, the
two Leonids — Leonid Basin and
Leonid Shor — were founders of the
Internationalist.
Leonid Basin, 56, lives in Farmington
Hills and is a senior project engineer at
GM Advanced Powertrain. He is origi-
nally from Belarus and is known among
his friends as the man with the amazing
memory, which, he says, he learned from
another game: chess.
Basin has been playing chess since he
was 7. Today, he is an International Chess
Master with the World Chess Federation
and has been known to take on 10 play-
ers at a time — and beat them all.
"So, if there are volunteers to play with
him on 10-plus boards, you are wel-
come Kostukovsky said. "We all tried,
with no success. He wins all the time
without looking at the boards"
Leonid Shor, 66, brings a wealth of
soccer knowledge and experience to the
team. Originally from the Ukraine, he is
a graduate of the Kiev Dynamo Soccer
Academy. He played professionally for
10 years and also coached for 10 years in
Russia.
Michael Rybak, 43, was born in
Poltava, Ukraine. He is an engineer
and, together with his wife, owns
the Souptastik Crepes Restaurant in
Farmington Hills.
"What brought us together?"
Kostukovsky said. "First of all, it's the
passion for soccer. Each one of us used to
play soccer when we were kids.
"For younger people, it's not going to
be easy to believe, but some of us used to
play with no football, per se. The home-
made, sphere objects that we were kick-
ing were the mom-made creations filled
with old rags. All we needed back then
was the excitement of playing the sport
we all loved" ❑
