Older than 40, JCC soccer players
enjoy high-powered games.

Val Leyzeruk
Special to the Jewish News

T

wice a week, a group gets
together for a fast-paced
game of soccer, balls zooming
through the air and runners moving
at top speed across the field, at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
The players probably aren't who you
would expect.
They're in shape. They're enthusias-
tic. They love the game. They're also all
at least 40 years old.
The Internationalist team is made
up of men from throughout the world:
Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia,
Lithuania, the United States, Israel,
Iran, Romania and Brazil. Professionally
they are diverse as well, working as law-
yers and engineers, restaurant owners
and travel agents. The one passion that
unites them all: soccer.
"Soccer is a very simple, com-
petitive and physical game said the
team's founder and president, Mark
Kostukovsky. "We all enjoy the camara-
derie and, of course, playing is good for
our health:'
The most popular sport in the world,
soccer (known everywhere outside the
United States as "football") was devel-
oped in England in 1863, and today
boasts more than 250 million players in
200 countries.
The Internationalist began as a hand-
ful of men who initially called them-
selves "For Those Who Are Over 40:'
a name suggested by Kostukovsky, 57,
who is originally from Lvov, Ukraine,
and now lives in Farmington Hills.
(Today, being older than 40 is the only

rule for membership.)
The first "Over 40" soccer club was
small and dedicated, but had no set
place to meet. Over the years, as more
and more men signed up, the group
turned to the JCC for a place to call
home. The team now plays at the JCC
every Sunday and Tuesday, inside or
outside depending on the weather. And
the program is coordinated by the JCC's
Jim Micovich of Warren, who also is on
the team.
"Most of us are people who were not
born in the United States:' Kostukovsky
said. "Do not get me wrong: to be a for-
eigner is not the requirement to become
a member. It just happened that most
of us were born overseas. Why? The
most reasonable explanation is that soc-
cer in the U.S. is still a 'foreign' sport.
However, it is getting there: The nation-
al U.S. teams finally manage to fight as
equals on different international soccer
tournaments:'
The Internationalist has played in
a few memorable events of its own
(including a recent game, held in
Cancun, against the Over 40 soccer club
of Mexico) and has stepped forward to
support Israel's teams with a gift of doz-
ens of soccer balls.

Off The Field
When not on the soccer field,
Kostukovsky is a civil engineer inspec-
tor. He says of his work: "If the roof
does not cave in when you are at Cobo
Hall in Detroit, the MGM Grand Detroit
Casino, the Compuware building or GM
plant — it's a part of my job:'
Arkadiy Ginzburg, 53, of West
Bloomfield is the club's treasurer and
has been with the Internationalist from
