she valued higher learning. Her chil-
dren fondly remember her inspiring
mantra: "Education is forever" and
have continued this legacy with each
of their families.
Her passion for knowledge was
matched only by her love of the arts.
An ever-present fixture at the Detroit
Institute of Arts, Arline dedicated
more than 25 years to her work as a
docent and volunteer. She surrounded
herself with books, music and art. She
was a well-traveled and sophisticated
woman. Arline Nadler is loved and
missed by all who knew her.
Arline Nadler (nee Levinson);
devoted mother of James, William and
Joan; loving sister of Shirley Shapiro;
cherished grandmother of Michael,
Alexandra, Samantha and Anderson.
Also survived by Linda Nadler, Mandy
Nadler and Landon Royals, as well as
loving nieces, nephews and many dear
friends.
Funeral services were private.
Contributions in her memory may be
sent to the Detroit Institute of Arts,
c/o DIA Annual Fund, 5200 Woodward
Ave., Detroit, MI 48202.

MARLENE PHILLIPS, 85, of Mesa,
Ariz., died Sept. 3, 2011.
She is survived by her daughters
and sons-in law, Michele Phillips and
Paul Bandy Jr. of Eastpointe, Maureen
and John Reyna of San Tan Valley,
Ariz.; grandchildren, Jason, Matthew
and Jonathan; brother-in-law, Robert
Leach. Marlene is also remembered
by many loving nieces, nephews, other
family members and friends.
Marlene was the beloved wife of the
late Harold Mat Phillips, sister of the
late Bernice Leach, the late Henrietta
(the late Irving) Kasper and the late
Ann (the late William) Feldman.
Contributions may be made to
Trees in Israel Program at the Jewish
National Fund or to the East Valley
Hospice in Arizona. Interment was
held at the Clover Hill Park Cemetery
in Birmingham. Arrangements by
Dorfman Chapel.

Rafal

MARTIN RAFAL,
90, of Farmington
Hills, died Sept. 6,
2011.
He was the found-
er and owner of
Rafal Spice Company
in Detroit's Eastern
Market that was in
business from 1960-

2008.
Mr. Rafal is survived by his wife,
Eleanor Beresh Rafal; daughters
and son-in-law, Deborah and James
Lecours of West Bloomfield, Marian

Rafal of Southfield; son, Donald Rafal
of Southfield; Eleanor's children, Diane
Willens, Marcy and John Sulewski,
Judy and John Willett; grandson,
Daniel Lecours; Eleanor's grandchil-
dren, David Willens, Nick, Ben and
Jesse Willett; sisters-in-law, Bevalon
Rafal, Jane Rafal, Leonie Reder;
brother-in-law, Mike Beresh; nieces
and nephews.
Mr. Rafal was the beloved husband
of the late Alice Rafal and the last sur-
viving child of the late Harry and the
late Mary Rafal.
Interment was at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to
Alzheimer's Association, Detroit Area
Chapter, 20300 Civic Center Drive,
Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48076, www.
alzgmc.org , or to a charity of one's
choice. Arrangements by Ira Kaufman

JACQUELINE
ROGERS, 77, of
West Bloomfield and
Las Vegas, died Sept.
9, 2011.
A past president
of Jewish War
Veterans Auxiliary in
Rogers
Las Vegas, she also
was a life member
of Hadassah, a member of Women's
American ORT, City of Hope and
a CASA Advocate for the National
Council of Jewish Women.
She had a lifelong love of music,
and sang with numerous choirs in
Michigan and Las Vegas.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Donald and
Keri Cohen of West Bloomfield;
daughter, Sandra Sherman of Las
Vegas; sister, Eleanor Marx of West
Bloomfield; brother-in-law Irving
Lazar of Chicago; grandchildren,
Joshua Sherman of Jerusalem, Randi
Sherman and her partner Kate Mueller
of Syracuse, N.Y., Hannah Cohen,
Emma Cohen; great-grandchild, Miri
Sherman; and her beloved cats, Frisky
and Mittens.
Mrs. Rogers was the loving wife for
more than 40 years of the late Jerry
Rogers; dear sister of the late Betty
Lazar and sister-in-law of the late
Irving Marx.
