T
he resignation of Rabbi
Jason Miller from the staff
of Tamarack Camps has
led the camps to sign a one-season
agreement with the Southfield-based
Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit (Vaad Harabonim).
According to a
Tamarack state-
ment, "Under the
guidance of the
Vaad, Tamarack
will purchase only
Vaad-approved
kosher products for
its Ortonville, Mich.,

location. Although
the Vaad will not be providing full
kashrut supervision of Tamarack, the
Vaad will conduct periodic inspec-
tions of the Ortonville kitchens to
offer guidance on matters involv-
ing the use of only approved kosher
products and in matters involving
food preparation and the laws of
kashrut.
"Full Vaad supervision will con-
tinue to be provided for some outside
groups utilizing the camp's facilities."
Frank Ellias, president of Tamarack
Camps, said, "We pleased about
our relationship with the Vaad
Harabonim. We look forward to not
only receiving their guidance in mat-
ters involving kosher food prepara-
tion but also in helping to educate
our campers in the laws of kashrut."
Steve Engel, executive director of
Tamarack since December, said the
camp is hosting Camp Marom, an
Orthodox boys camp, for the third
consecutive summer in 2011. In addi-
tion, he said, a separate Orthodox
camp for girls will begin this year.

a Chicago-area human rights and
Jewish activist, was named to the fed-

President Obama tapped Gaynor

Jason Miller, a Conservative rabbi,
had served as Tamarack's resident
rabbi for nearly three years and had
supervised kashrut at Ortonville. He
serves as the rabbi at Congregation
T'chiyah in Oak Park, as head of
Kosher Michigan and as owner of
Access Computer Technologies in
West Bloomfield.
Miller said his new computer busi-
ness led him to resign from Tamarack.
"I can only do so many things
in 24 hours," he said. "I love being
at camp, but I just couldn't be in
Ortonville all summer."
Miller's father retired last year and
the rabbi took over his father's com-
puter business in August. "It's occu-
pying more time than I ever thought
it would," Miller said.
The company, which does infor-
mation technology support, website
development and social media
marketing, was re-named and re-
launched in January. Miller has a
partner and two employees in the
business.
"I love what I'm doing:' said Miller.
"It's just the right amount of con-
gregational work, kashrus [kosher
supervision] and computer company
— I believe strongly in social media."
