Eating Tips
Make holidays
manageable.
T
hanksgiving, Chanukah and
other holidays are upon us.
With them, come turkey,
lathes, kugel and other high-calorie
treats. For many, this is a time of great
anxiety as people seek to stay true
to their current diets and/or healthy
lifestyles.
However, whether you are dieting or
simply watching your weight, you can
still enjoy the
festivities and
indulge in the
various deli-
cacies avail-
able while still
maintaining
your waistline
by doing the
following:
We'll tell you.

gry. If you
are attending
a party where
hors d'oeuvres will be served, eat
before you arrive.
• Navigating the buffet table.
Survey what's available before getting
in line. If possible, call ahead to find
out what is being served. You can offer
to bring a plate of your own. Use a
salad plate instead of a dinner plate
to create the illusion of having more
food. Fill your plate with vegetables,
salad, fruit and a protein (boneless,
skinless chicken breast, beef, fish).
• Eat your calories instead of
drinking them. Avoid high-calorie
drinks and stick to water, diet soda or
even red wine.
• Know your triggers. If you can-
not have just one piece of chocolate,
avoid eating it. Divert your attention
by spending time talking with each
and every guest you know at the
party; this will leave little or no time
for snacking.
• Take a break between bites. This
will enable your body to react to being
full before you eat too much.
The holidays do not have to mean
weight gain. By focusing on a healthy
balance of food, activity and fun,
you can help make this a season to
remember. ❑
